Microsoft and Apple will go head-to-head this autumn, when they both launch new computer operating systems. Microsoft’s new software, Windows 7, hits the shops on October 22, but is already flying off the shelves – so many people tried to pre-order the operating system on launch day that it crashed the Microsoft website. Apple, meanwhile, releases Snow Leopard in September, and hopes that the latest version of OS X will appeal to the growing number of converts who are swapping their Windows PCs for Macs – Apple sold almost 10 million Macs last year, its highest ever figure.
